How detail can a 3D scanner go in scanning organic assets? Let’s check this out!

3D scanner has become more down-to-earth these years, especially to the 3D visual effect artist. A good scanner can even take their works up a notch. This time let’s visit Rich Gaddy from the United States and see how the new Einstar helps him with his piece.

About Rich Gaddy

Rich Gaddy is a 3D VFX Artist in Las Vegas, Nevada. He loves to hone his craft and discover new more efficient ways to creating 3D art & animation. He believes all workflows can be non-destructive, allowing for adaptive changes and flexibility, even in high pressure situations.

Previously, Rich was using the Einscan- SE for his work. “I got some of my best quality scans while scanning in a really low light environment”, he said with appreciation to the mount and turntable which are packed with the Einscan- SE.

How Einstar different from other 3D scanners?

However, when he received the new Einstar, he changes his mind. “It (the Einstar) allows for us to scan in a well-lit environment and still pick up a lot of the texture details that we're looking for,” he said, believing that the reason of this outstanding performance is the three camera system in which one of them is an infra-red one.

Among the various feature of Einstar, Rich enjoys the indicators built inside the software the most. There are mainly two of them in EXStar. The first is the distance indicator at the left of the screen. It tells the users if the distance of the scanner to object is appropriate or not by three colors, blue for far, green for good red means too close to the object. The other one is the data quality indicator. It gives users a heads up while scanning on how well the scan is coming out. “The updates to the software have been very helpful.”, said rich when doing a body scan of his friend.

Final Thoughts

“Overall, the point calculation and the polygon measure have been much faster, in my experience than they were previously. There are a few artifacts in this scan, but I was pretty happy with the overall result. It gave me a lot more detail than I was expecting, so I wasn't really worried about those artifacts that showed up. Most of those artifacts are from either me moving too quickly with the scanner or just subtle movements from the subject.” – Rich Gaddy, a 3D VFX artist, L.A.
