A Hands-on Review by a Tokyo University Graduate and 3D Printing Expert from Age of 3DP – All-in-One 3D Scanner EINSTAR VEGA!

In the rapidly evolving world of 3D scanning technology,
EINSTAR VEGA from SHINING 3D has set a new benchmark. As a standalone, all-in-one device, it eliminates the need for external computers or smartphones, making it an ideal tool for professionals and enthusiasts alike. This blog dives into the features, performance, and versatility of the EINSTAR VEGA to highlight why it’s a game-changer in the field of 3D scanning.

Key Features of Einstar Vega

All-in-One Design

Unlike traditional 3D scanners that rely on external devices, the Einstar Vega is fully autonomous. With its integrated 6.4-inch display and powerful processing hardware, it delivers seamless scanning and processing directly on the device. Its specs include:

  • 32GB of memory
  • 32GB eMMC + 512GB SSD of storage
This capability allows users to perform high-speed scans and handle large 3D models effortlessly.

Two 3D Scanners in One: Two Scanning Modes for Flexibility
  1. HD Mode: Equipped with MEMS projector for short range scanning and designed for capturing intricate details such as coins or small objects up to 0.05mm resulotion.
  2. Fast Mode: Equipped with VCSEL projector to enable the scanning of larger objects, such as motorcycles, at speeds of up to 20 frames per second.

The flexibility to switch between these modes makes the device versatile enough for diverse applications.

      Color Scanning and Outdoor Use

      1. Color Scanning: Captures not only the 3D shape but also the surface color of the object with 48MP resolution.
      2. Reliable Scanning Outdoor: Performs well in various lighting conditions even under sunlight, extending usability beyond controlled environments.
      3. Ideal for Dark Surface:
        Impressive Storage and Processing Power
        1. The EINSTAR VEGA features hardware that rivals many modern laptops, making it perfect for high-demand scanning tasks without performance bottlenecks.

Many 3D scanners struggle in outdoor environments due to sunlight interfering with sensors. However, the EINSTAR VEGA performs well even under direct sunlight, making it suitable for scanning outdoor sculptures, architectural features, and large objects in various lighting conditions.

          Practical Applications: Real-World Testing

To test the capabilities of the EINSTAR VEGA, we explored several scenarios:

          Scanning Small Objects (Figures, Coin)

Using a sample figurine, he tested the HD Mode for highly detailed scanning. The scanner performed exceptionally well, capturing fine features like facial details and textures without any issues. The real-time preview feature allowed we to adjust and ensure the scan was flawless. After scanning, the one-click processing function converted the data into a mesh and cleaned up the scan, leaving a ready-to-print 3D model.

Scanning Reflective and Dark Objects (Shoes,Coin

Typically challenging for 3D scanners due to low light reflection, black objects, like shoes, were handled effortlessly. The scanner even picked up small logos and intricate details on the shoe's surface, excelled even with highly reflective surfaces, such as a metal coin, producing a high-quality 3D model. For even better results, using a light dusting of powder on highly reflective objects can further improve scan.

          Outdoor Scanning Under Sunlight

The EINSTAR VEGA excels in outdoor use, a capability that many other 3D scanners on the market lack. It can capture 3D geometric features with remarkable detail, staying true to the original form. However, one important point to note is that direct sunlight may affect color fidelity during scanning. When texture information is required, it’s best to scan in shaded areas or during times of the day when sunlight is less intense to achieve optimal results

          Customized Attachments

By scanning a vacuum cleaner attachment, we designed a custom-fitting nozzle using 3D modeling software like Blender. The precise scan allowed for a snug fit when printed, showcasing the device's practicality for DIY projects.

          Post-Processing and Outputs

Einstar Vega supports exporting files in STL and OBJ formats, compatible with most 3D modeling and printing software. The onboard editing tools allow for removing unwanted data and refining the scans before export. SHINING3D Cloud lets users share data conveniently or download models for further refinement.

          3D Printing Integration

To validate the scans, we 3D printed various models:

          1. A figurine that replicated the original with stunning resolution
          2. A miniature shoe, scaled down to 25%, that retained every detail
          3. A functional vacuum cleaner attachment, demonstrating real-world utility

The results underscored the device's ability to produce production-ready data for various applications.

Conclusion: Who Should Consider the EINSTAR VEGA?

The EINSTAR VEGA is a perfect fit for:

          1. Artists and Designers: For creating detailed replicas and sculptures
          2. Manufacturers: To design custom parts and prototypes
          3. Educators and Researchers: As a teaching tool for engineering or art
          4. DIY Enthusiasts: Looking to explore creative projects

With its ease of use, versatility, and impressive output quality, the EINSTAR VEGA is a worthy investment for anyone venturing into 3D scanning.
